We know that experience of neglect in childhood can have significant and long-term consequences, affecting many areas of a child’s development and their life into adulthood. It is the most common type of abuse experienced by children in Walsall, as it is nationally therefore Neglect is a priority for Walsall Safeguarding Partnership.

Aims

  • To raise awareness of Child neglect strategy across all partners working with children and Families in Walsall
  • Call for action to support in the prevention, early identification and effective support for children experiencing neglect.
  • Provide opportunity for networking across the partnership to improve multi-agency working

Programme of the Day The day will be divided into three parts:

PART 1 - The morning will be focused raising awareness around neglect including

  • Overview of Safeguarding Partnership and why child neglect is a priority
  • Walsall context of child neglect – needs assessment.
  • Learning from reviews – including a learning from Norfolk review and local Walsall review
  • Opportunity to reflect through case studies.

PART 2 – lunch - market place with lots of information about services/interventions and tools which can be drawn upon to prevent neglect or support children who experience neglect.

PART 3 – Afternoon – Focus on call to action All participants will be provided with the opportunity to take part in 2 out of 3 - 45 min workshops:

  • Right help Right time workshop – the aim would be to get practitioners to reflect what neglect means across right help right time guidance and the actions they can take within the role, and how the GCP2 can support
  • AWARE app – police mobile app which is helping to effectively identify child neglect. The aim of the workshop will be to share good practice and to consider how this could be upscaled to help other partners (e.g. housing, Health, adults, vol sector) to effectively identify neglect.
  • The role of effective supervision in supporting children who experiencing neglect – this has been a key theme identified across multi agency audits and reviews. The focus of this session will be to explore best practice in multi-agency group supervision and explore who this can be upscaled in Walsall.
